Marriage Counseling & Couples Therapy
In-person or virtually in Minnesota
Whether you need a relationship "tune-up" or are in crisis, I'm here to help you reconnect.
What is Marriage Counseling & Couples Therapy?
A safe space for you and your partner to address the parts of your relationship that are yearning for attention.
Research shows that most couples seek relationship counseling years after their difficulties first started showing up. Whether you're in crisis or simply want to strengthen your bond, couples therapy can help you reconnect and build the relationship you long for.
Is this right for me?
Couples come to me for a variety of reasons, including:
Feeling disconnected from each other
Not getting needs met in the relationship
Continually fighting the same battles without resolution
Communication issues
Betrayal of trust such as an affair
Difficulties with sex and intimacy
Highly escalated conflict
Deciding whether or not to divorce, or proceeding with divorce gracefully
Life transitions (marriage, remarriage, parenthood, empty nesting)
Blended family and step-parenting concerns
Dealing with a cancer or other diagnosis as a couple
I use a "no-shame, no-blame" approach to marriage counseling.
We now have a coherent understanding of adult romantic love, and know that the primary source of distress between couples is when their connection to each other is threatened or inaccessible. When the answer to the question of "ARE you there for me?" (are you available, responsive, and engaged?) is increasingly "no" or "I'm not sure," a negative cycle of interactions takes over the relationship.
I help couples to fight their negative cycle, uncover their need and longing to be close, and learn how to get their needs met without shame or blame, helping them to reconnect and develop a deep and lasting bond.
I do this using a therapeutic method called Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples (EFT), a highly effective and research-validated method that is effective with even the most distressed couples facing challenges such as infidelity and trauma.
